Welcome Back! Hope everyone had a great week-end!
We will be continuing to work on our Christmas Around the World Projects. Students have chosen a country and formed their own groups. They have been researching and getting organized to start their backboards. All groups should have a backboard in the classroom by Monday. We will be presenting on Friday, December 16 and Monday, Dec. 19.
In math, we will be finishing our chapter on large numbers and working with decimals. We will be having our chapter test on Friday, Dec. 9.
We will be continuing our "Working with Words" this week, with our ten word test on Friday. This will be our last test until after the Christmas break.
We will be completing our Microscope labs this week and starting our final project for the Unit~ Diversity of Living Things. Students will be organizing all information with the Kingdoms in a graphic organizer on the computer and presenting this to the class. Students will have the option of working with a partner or on their own.
I would like to ask students to bring in a favorite Christmas story book, if they have, to share will the class. I will be sharing some of my favorite read aloud the next couple of weeks as well.

Welcome! I hope everyone had a great week-end with the beautiful weather!
In math this week, we will continue working with decimals. We will review adding, subtracting, and multiplying, then we will work on dividing with decimals as well. There will be a short quiz on Friday to show what we know! It will be on the four operations with decimals.
We are going to start our research projects on Christmas Around the World. We will get our groups and countries finalized on Monday, and then BEGIN! I have the library booked for Tuesday and Wednesday to give all groups time to do some research in books and encyclopedias before we go to the computer lab. I expect each group to use a variety of resources.
We will be reviewing microscopes on Monday, and then students will be given time to practice using them. We will start our lab on Thursday (perhaps Monday depending on our skill).

Week of November 21, 2011
Hello Everyone! I hope you had a peaceful week-end.
I have lots of interesting learning planned for this week.
In Language Arts, we are going to start a Book Club Unit on fantasy. It is entitled "Hero of Another World". We will be learning about the fantasy genre as well.
In math, we will be studying place value in the tenths position and beyond. We will also be concentrating on multiplying and dividing with decimals. So make sure to review your basic facts! I have started a "Math Club" at lunch on Day 5. This time is available for students to drop in if they have any concerns or areas which they would like some extra support or practice. All are welcome!
We finished our science labs on the mealworms and they were due on Friday. We will be starting a microscope study this week. We will be learning the parts of a microscope, rules for handling this device, as well as how to write a lab.
In French, we will finish our menus and then focus on the roles of waitress/waitress and the client in a restaurant.

In Math, we are going to review the order of operations, and then work on positive and negative integers.
In Language Arts, we are going to complete our studies with the "Synthesizing Unit" and get ready to start our Book Club.
We will be doing our research and observation on the meal worms this week, and yes... they are still living! Students will be working on a science lab which will be due on Friday.
Book orders will be going home today and will be due on Wednesday, November 23.

Week of October 23, 2011
Hi...welcome back! I hope everyone had a great long weekend. Now it is time to get back to work!
In math this week, we are continuing to study factors and will be spending some time on factor trees. We will be having a test on Friday on multiples, factors, prime, and composite numbers. Make sure to continue to work on basic facts of addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
In Language Arts, we will finish our self monitoring strategy unit by reading a brochure and working on persuasive writing.
In Science we are continuing to work on the Diversity Unit. We will be completing our graphic organizer of Arthropods in the computer lab and presenting these to class.
We will be choosing our words for Word Study on Monday and will be back on track for a quiz on Friday.
Remember to have permission slip and $2 in for our field trip on Tuesday. We are going to the soccer complex in Stratford where students will get a chance to try new and favorite sports. We will be stopping for lunch at Wendy's, so students need to bring a bag lunch or money. All participants need to have their indoor sneakers in order to participate.
Money is due on Monday for the first band fundraiser, the Shopping Extravaganza which will be held on Saturday, October 29.
Early Morning Band Practice on Tuesday as well.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope everyone had a great week-end, especially with the beautiful weather!
This week in Math, we will be working on Prime and Composite numbers, as well as multiples.
We will be continuing with our Self-Monitoring Strategy in Language Arts. Students will be choosing their new spelling words on Tuesday, and we will have our quiz on Friday.
We are focusing on "Invertebrates" and the subgroups this week in Science.
If you are planning on ordering school pictures, the money and order form is due on Tuesday, October 11.
There is Early Morning Band on Tuesday as well.
Good luck to all our Cross Country participants who will be competing in the Provincials on Saturday, October 15.

Week of October 3, 2011
Hope everyone had a peaceful week-end! It is hard to believe with are already into the month of October!
Everyone did a great job on the Math test last week. I was very proud of the students' work. This week we will work on place value, and big numbers. We will also be working on the basic operations, especially with word problems. Sounds like fun...
We are continuing our work on "Self Monitoring" in Language Arts but will also be focusing on the importance of text features and pre-reading of nonfiction text. The class will also be sharing their version of the children's story of "The Secret Shortcut".
Students will have ten more words to work on in spelling, with a test on Friday.
We are continuing our study of living things in Science, and working on invertebrates this week.
Remember, there is Early Morning Band on Tuesday at 7:45.
The Zone Cross Country Meet is on Thursday, October 6. Good luck to the athletes who have been working hard and showing great improvement each week.

Week of September 26, 2011
What a beautiful week-end! I hope everyone enjoyed the outdoors and the sunshine!
We are continuing our "Self Monitoring" Unit in Language Arts. We are questioning what we are reading using "thin" and "thick" questions. We always make sure that we are understanding what we are reading by questioning, predicting, and using text features.
We will be finishing Unit 1 in Math and will be having our first math quiz on Wednesday, Sept. 28. We will be working with large numbers on Unit 2. Please make sure that you are reviewing basic facts, especially with the multiplications.
We will be starting our "Working with Words" this week. Students will be choosing their words on Monday, and there will be a quiz on Friday.
We are continuing to work on "Diversity of Living Things" in science. Students will be making a tree classification on where they live this week.
In French, we have completed our review and are starting our first unit called "Au Cafe". Students have been doing a great job with participation.
If weather permits, we will be having our Terry Fox walk on school grounds on Wednesday, followed by our Pie Throwing Event. All donations will be given to help find a cure for cancer.
Early Morning Band is on Tuesday at 7:45.
Remember, girls will be receiving their first needle for HPV on Tuesday.

We will be continuing our reading of the "Tree of Life". We are learning to self monitor our reading~to think outloud and to take charge and track our comprehension. We are also learning to pick out the most important facts because as we are learning to read, we are also reading to learn.
We will be continuing to study "Classification of Living Things" in science. We will be making our own classification tree this week.
In French, we will continue our review of basic vocabulary and then we will be starting our first unit "Au Cafe".
Remember, Early Morning Band and school pictures will both take place on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

I hope that everyone has had a great summer and is ready to get back to work. We had a wonderful start to grade six but now the real learning begins...
In Math, we are starting with chapter one in our textbooks. We are going to be learning about "Input" and "Output" and the rules involved.
We are starting our new program in Language Arts. We are starting with a Self Monitoring Unit. We will begin using our Writer's Notebooks as well. I will put doing some reading assessments this week, and will be doing spelling checks using high frequency words.
In Science, we will be starting our unit called "Diversity of Living Things".
French will also start this week. I will be reviewing basic vocabulary.
Cross Country starts this week with practices being held on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00-3:45.
Don't forget about Early Morning Band beginning on Tuesday at 7:45.
